Virgil Vallecera with his team Champion in Motting Contest Held at Supreme Court Manila, Sept 28 -30 , 2011.with Law school University of Cebu, Philippines…A team composed of law students from the University of Cebu dominated the 2011 National Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law. Sixteen other schools joined the competitions. University of Cebu won over the defending champions Silliman University in the finals.
Aside from winning the competition, the team’s oralists Virgil Vallecera and Manuel Elijah Sarausad were adjudged as the best and second best mooters of the competitions. UC also won in the role-play challenge and was awarded the best memorial award. It is the first time since the contest’s inception in 2005 that a school swept all major awards.
Vallecera and Sarausad were supported by 8 researchers and coach Atty. Cheryl Cabutihan. The research team was composed of Kara Mae Noveda, Gibran Abu Bakar, Kristine Monsanto, John Menguito, Joana de Suyo, Fellain Marquez, Merachelle Boraccho and Monique Paloma.
Associate Justice Lourdes Sereno, lawyers Harry Roque and Lorna Kapunan, Dr. Mario Aguja of Mindanao State University-General Santos and Fork Leong Yow, legal officer of the International Committee on Red Cross (ICRC) in Kuala Lumpur were the judges of championship round of the competition. With the win, Team UC will represent the country in the regional finals to be held in Hong Kong next year.
The contest was organized by the Philippine Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross in cooperation with the Supreme Court of the Philippines and the Philippine Association of Law Schools. The competition was hosted by the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law. It was held last September 27-30, 2011.
